Haji and Umrah are sacred pilgrimages for Muslims to the holy city of Mecca. These religious journeys require pilgrims to be in good health and adequately protected against various infectious diseases. Since Covid restrictions have been lifted, taking precautions before going on your pilgrimage is something travellers have to keep in mind, especially for the elderly and immunocompromised.
At Klinik Azurose, we provide essential vaccinations and screenings for those preparing to embark on Haji or Umrah to ensure their health and safety during these spiritual events.
What Vaccinations are Required for Haji and Umrah?
The following vaccinations are required according to the Maklumat Imunisasi Wajib by Tabung Haji and outlined as Suntikan Vaksin Bagi Bakal Haji by the KKM. The Meningococcal Vaccine is the only one required but some travellers take additional vaccines like the Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccine as a precaution.
Meningococcal Vaccine
Vaksin Meningococcal Quadrivalent
All travellers over the age of 2 years must have a valid certificate showing vaccination with the quadrivalent (ACYW135) meningococcal vaccine. This vaccine needs to be administered at least two weeks before arrival in Saudi Arabia and remains valid for 3 years.
Influenza Vaccine
Vaksin Influenza
While not mandatory, it’s highly recommended to get the seasonal influenza vaccine for added protection during the pilgrimage. This is especially true for vulnerable individuals, such as those aged 50 and above, with health problems like asthma or kidney diseases. The vaccine will be valid for a year.
Pneumococcal Vaccine
Vaksin Pneumococcal
While the pneumococcal vaccine is also not mandatory for Haji or Umrah pilgrimage, it is highly recommended for certain individuals due to the increased risk of lung infections during these mass gatherings. This immunity will be maintained for 5 years.
Why Are Additional Vaccines Recommended?
Increased Risk: Crowded conditions and close contact with others during Haji and Umrah can increase the risk of contracting pneumococcal infections, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
Boosting Immunity: Some childhood vaccinations may lose their effectiveness over time. Travel vaccinations serve as boosters, ensuring your immunity against certain diseases remains strong.
Protection for Others: Vaccination not only protects individuals but also reduces the spread of infectious bacteria to others, including family members upon returning home.
It is recommended that those with increased risk should take precautions with vaccinations, including pregnant women, children under 5 years old, the elderly, and individuals with underlying health conditions like asthma, and chronic heart or lung diseases.
