What Is Implanon?

Implanon NXT is a small, flexible plastic rod about the size of a matchstick. It releases a steady dose of the hormone etonogestrel to prevent pregnancy. The hormone works by:

Implanon Insertion

Implanon is inserted just under the skin of your upper arm. The procedure is quick, usually taking less than 10 minutes, and is done under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. Our doctor will clean and numb the area before inserting the implant using a specially designed applicator. You may feel a slight pinch, but most patients report minimal pain. Once inserted, Implanon will release a steady dose of hormones to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years.

implanon removal

Implanon Removal

Removal is a simple outpatient procedure that typically takes less than 15 minutes. Our doctor will numb the area around the implant, make a small incision, and gently remove the device. If you wish, a new implant can be inserted during the same visit. After removal, your fertility returns quickly, often within a few weeks. You’ll be given instructions on how to care for the area to reduce swelling or bruising.

Some People May Not Be Suitable for Implanon

Implanon contains a progestin hormone, which can slightly increase the risk of developing blood clots, especially if you already have a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, or stroke. In such cases, your doctor may recommend a non-hormonal contraceptive instead.

Because the hormone in Implanon is metabolized in the liver, women with active liver disease, liver tumors, or impaired liver function may not be able to process the hormone effectively. This could worsen liver function or lead to complications.

If you’re experiencing irregular or heavy bleeding that hasn’t been properly diagnosed, it’s important to rule out serious conditions (like fibroids, polyps, or cancer) before starting hormonal birth control. Implanon may mask the symptoms and delay proper diagnosis.

Since Implanon releases synthetic progesterone, it is generally not recommended for women with current or past breast cancer, as the hormone could potentially stimulate cancer cell growth.

If you’re unsure whether you fall into any of these categories, a thorough health screening with a doctor is necessary before getting Implanon. They’ll review your medical history, current medications, and lifestyle to make sure it’s safe and appropriate for you.
