Intrauterine Device

which iud is right for you 1440x810 1

Looking for a long-term, low-maintenance contraceptive option? An intrauterine device (IUD) offers effective pregnancy protection for years at a time — with no daily pills, no monthly injections, and nothing to remember.

At Klinik Azurose, our doctors provide professional consultation, insertion, and removal of IUDs in a safe and comfortable environment.

What Is an IUD?

An IUD is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus by a doctor to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types available:

Hormonal IUD
Releases a small amount of progestin (levonorgestrel) to prevent pregnancy. It works by thickening cervical mucus, thinning the uterine lining, and in some cases suppressing ovulation. Effective for 3 to 8 years depending on the brand.

Copper IUD
A non-hormonal option. The copper acts as a natural spermicide, creating an environment that is toxic to sperm and prevents fertilisation. Effective for up to 10 years and can also be used as emergency contraception if inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex.

IUD Insertion

IUD insertion is performed in the clinic and typically takes less than 15 minutes. Your doctor will first conduct a pelvic examination to assess the position and size of your uterus. The IUD is then carefully inserted through the cervix into the uterus using a thin applicator.

You may experience some cramping or discomfort during and shortly after the procedure, similar to period pain. This usually settles within a few hours to a day. Most patients are able to resume normal activities the same day.

IUD Removal What to Expect 1024x679 1

IUD Removal

Removal is a straightforward procedure that takes just a few minutes. Your doctor will locate the IUD strings and gently pull to remove the device. Some patients feel mild cramping during removal, but it is generally quick and well-tolerated.

If you wish, a new IUD can be inserted during the same visit. Fertility typically returns very quickly after removal, often within the first menstrual cycle.

Some People May Not Be Suitable for an IUD

Women with a current pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or sexually transmitted infection (STI) should not have an IUD inserted until the infection has been fully treated. Inserting an IUD during an active infection increases the risk of the infection spreading to the uterus.

Undiagnosed irregular or heavy bleeding should be investigated before considering an IUD. Hormonal IUDs may mask symptoms, potentially delaying the identification of an underlying condition.

Conditions such as fibroids or a malformed uterus can interfere with correct IUD placement, making insertion difficult or increasing the risk of the device shifting.

Hormonal IUDs may not be suitable for women with a history of certain hormone-sensitive cancers. In such cases, a copper IUD may be considered as a non-hormonal alternative, subject to medical review.

Women with a known copper allergy or Wilson’s disease, which is a condition that causes copper to accumulate in the body, should not use a copper IUD.

FAQ on IUD

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients experience some cramping during and immediately after insertion, similar to period cramps. Discomfort is usually short-lived and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

An IUD can be inserted at any point in your menstrual cycle. Insertion during your period is sometimes preferred as the cervix is slightly more open, which can make the process more comfortable.

A copper IUD is effective immediately after insertion. A hormonal IUD is effective immediately if inserted within the first 7 days of your period. If inserted at other times, use backup contraception for 7 days.

Common side effects include irregular spotting in the first few months, lighter periods over time, and in some cases no periods at all — which is not harmful. Some women may experience mild hormonal symptoms such as mood changes or acne, though these are less common due to the low hormone dose.

Some women experience heavier or more painful periods, particularly in the first few months after insertion. This often improves over time.

It is uncommon but possible. Your doctor will teach you how to check the strings periodically. If you cannot feel the strings or suspect the IUD has moved, come in for a check.

Yes. You can have it removed at any time if you are planning a pregnancy or wish to switch methods. Fertility returns quickly after removal.
